Song of the day......Linkin Park with "Numb"

I've mentioned with great frequency on this blog that I really like when Rock music is fused with Electronic music for lack of a better term. I really think Rock music is taken to a whole new level when loops, turntables, and synthesizers are added to the mix. The songs are just so much more complex, and as a listener to me its fun to listen to all the different things going on. I think that's why Pet Sounds was such a phenomenal album for the Beach Boys. There was just so much going on.......so complex. Today's song of the day is by the band Linkin Park, which has a great deal of these complexities in their songs. One of my favorite tracks from them is this track "Numb" off of the Meteora album. Check out "Numb," and listen to all of the different things going on during this song.

Song of the day.........Stevie Wonder with "Superstition"

Today's song of the day is one of the most recognizable tracks from the '70's. I love the way this song builds.....Drums open the track, then the synth part kicks in, and then that horn section adds another layer. Just a great track from one of the true pioneers of the use of synthesizers in music. Stevie Wonder changed so much of the musical landscape in the '70's, and is one of the most influential musicians, and singer/songwriters of all time. Check out "Superstition."

Song of the day......Filter with "The Wake"

Today's song of the day comes to us from the band Filter. Most will remember the band from their 1995 release "Short Bus," which featured the hit single "Hey Man Nice Shot." Thirteen years later the band released their third album, "Anthems for the Damned," which featured today's song of the day. Track number three on the album is "The Wake." I really dig the chord changes at the chorus on this track. Just sounds great along with the vocal crescendo.......So, check out "The Wake."

Today's song of the day is from this group Peter Bjorn and John, who I really am starting to dig a lot. Everything I've heard is so catchy, and is written so well. Check out this track from their 2004 album "Falling Out." This track is "It Beats Me Every Time," and is today's song of the day.

Song of the day........Bobby Brown with "Every Little Step"

Remember when Bobby Brown was at the height of his game.....back in the late '80's and early '90's? Back in those days I really thought he was releasing some catchy, good Pop songs. When he was on his game, he was probably the best singer/songwriter in the Pop world. Let us remember some of the songs that were released during those days. This track is "Every Little Step," and is just so catchy. Back during those days I was listening to a lot of Pop music, and Bobby Brown was definitely one of my favorites. Song of the day........Trans-Siberian Orchestra with "The Dark"

Today's song of the day comes to us from the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Their Christmas catalog is very familiar to everybody, but they've put out a couple of albums that are not holiday themed albums. My favorite of those albums is their 2000 release "Beethoven's Last Night." It just has some great rock renditions of some of Beethoven's compositions. Check out this version of "The Dark" featuring the incredible vocals of Georgia Napolitano, and the amazing guitar of Mr. Al Pitrelli. Check it out......

Song of the day........Violent Femmes with "Gone Daddy Gone"

One of my first memories of listening to local alternative rock radio was listening to the Violent Femmes. Back in the early '90's a local alternative station gave them a lot of airplay, and also had them on their radio stations music festival over the summer. It was the first concert that I've ever been to. The Femmes were very impressive. Unlike the other bands they came out with guitars with very little distortion, which was different compared to the grunge scene that was big at the time. They played this set of songs, and even without the distortion on the guitars, they had this angst to their music that I really liked. One of my favorites from them is this song "Gone Daddy Gone." I don't recall another song on Rock radio at the time that had a Xylophone solo. Check out "Gone Daddy Gone."

Song of the day.......Bush with "40 Miles From the Sun"

One of my favorite bands in the '90's was Bush. Their third album that was released at the end of the '90's was titled "The Science of Things." One of my favorite tracks off of that album was this song "40 Miles From the Sun." It's just kind of got this melancholy feel to it. Some great guitar parts in this. This is one of my favorites from this band because it's not the straight ahead Rock like most of their stuff. This mellower song really shows the depth, and talent of this band. Just a great song. So, check out "40 Miles From the Sun" from Bush.

Song of the day.......Garbage with "Only Happy When It Rains"

I've always referred to Garbage as a "musician's band." To me they really are a super group of musicians. Each one is incredibly talented in their own right, and when they come together to play music the result is absolutely amazing. I've listened to a lot of music over the years, and have been to a ton of live shows, and to this day Garbage absolutely amazes me. From what I hear they are in the studio presently working on a new album, and I can't wait for the album, and the tour that hopefully follows. They are easily one of the best live bands of the last 20 years. Easily.

Their self-titled debut album had a number of great hits on it including this one. Check out "Only Happy When It Rains."

Song of the day........The Xx with "Intro"

I really don't know too much about this group The Xx, but this came on my Pandora station and I really like it. It's got a great sound. From the guitar, to the synth, to the bass line, to the drums.......it just sounds great to me. Sure the song clocks in at just over two minutes, but it's a very cool two minutes. It just has this kind of surreal feel to it....So, check out The Xx with "Intro."

Song of the day........Bush with "Glycerine"

Today's song of the day comes to us from one of the best bands to emerge from the post-grunge music scene. The band Bush are a British rock band that was formed in the early '90's. In 1992 they released their debut album Sixteen Stone, and there really was nothing else like it out there at the time. Every song on the album was good, and it is still one of those albums that you can listen to from front to back without needing to skip over some so-so songs. I think it was one of the most impressive debut albums from a Rock band in the '90's. So, many great tracks. One of the bigger singles off of the album is this song "Glycerine." There really isn't much to it. It's just vocals, and a couple of guitars, and violin throughout. It's this masterpiece of a song using only a handful of chords, but it works. Definitely one of the best songs of the '90's. Check out "Glycerine."

Song of the day........Incubus with "I Miss You"

My appreciation for Incubus' music is a bit late to be honest. I really liked the singles that they were releasing, but never found myself really focusing in on their music. Recently I heard "I Miss You" for the first time, and I have started to listen to their material and it is really great stuff. I really like the guitar effects on this track, and the vocals. Song has just a great melody, and I really dig it. Check out this track from Incubus, "I Miss You."

Song of the day.........Foreigner with "I Want To Know What Love Is"

There was some great music that came out of the late '70's and early '80's. Most of the stuff that I'm really fond of was from underground artists of that time like New Zealand's Split Enz, but some of that mainstream Rock radio stuff was pretty decent as well. There were some big hits churned out by the Rock band Foreigner. One of their biggest hits was this track "I Want To Know What Love Is." Once you've heard a few bars you instantly remember how it goes. It's one of those memorable '80's songs that was featured on every one of those Classic Rock compilations. The highlight of the track for me is the vocals throughout that come to this big crescendo at the end where it sounds like they may have added a choir on the studio track. The synthesizer in this track really drives it though. Just a great synth part. So, check out "I Want To Know What Love Is" by Foreigner.

Song of the day........Blink 182 with "First Date"

Today's song of the day is from the band Blink 182. To be really honest I'm not a big fan of their material, and their live shows are like improv comedy shows with a little bit of music thrown in. I saw them way back in the day after their Sophmore album came out, and actually left half way through the show. That's the only concert that I have ever left early at with the exception of a couple of shows with inclement weather. Some of their tunes are quite catchy, and I admit that. I'm just not a big fan of them as a whole. Just not my cup of tea. Check out one of their big hits from the early 2000's, "First Date."

Song of the day......Muse with "Knights of Cydonia"

If someone were to ask me to give a modern example of a song which really showcases the talent of a guitar player I would find it hard to believe that I would not mention this song. There is just so much going on with the guitar part in this song, as there are in all of Muse's songs. The involved instrumentation in all of Muse's songs is really why I fell in love with their music. When I listen to a Muse song I am drawn first into the catchy melody, and the guitar tracks. Then I think of the detail of these guitar parts. There are always so many things at play in a Muse song. Whether it's the intricacy of the music itself or the bands use of effects which just elevate their music in my opinion to a very high level. When asked to give an example of intricate songwriting, and talented musicians, I would find it difficult to leave out a track by Muse, and I think "Knights of Cydonia" is the perfect introduction to this band. I woudl find it hard to believe an equation where a musician listens to "Knights of Cydonia," and is not impressed. So, check out "Knights of Cydonia." Even if you are not a fan of Muse's music it is undeniable that this band is incredibly talented.

Song of the day............V.A.S.T. with "Temptation"

Today's song of the day comes to us from songwriter Jon Crosby's project VAST. The debut album from VAST, "Visual Audio Sensory Theater," is one of my favorite albums of the '90's. It just has so much going on. The studio production, and songwriting on the album is all done so well. Several songs use samples from monk chants, and add this surreal element to these hard rock tracks. A good example of the use of these samples, and a great example of the complexity of this album can be heard in this track "Temptation," which is one of my favorites off of the album. Just great stuff. Check out VAST with the track "Temptation." It's today's song of the day.

Song of the day.........Depeche Mode with "Behind The Wheel"

Today's song of the day is from Depeche Mode's 1987 album "Music for the Masses." This is one of the standout tracks from that album. The track starts off with drums and bass, then the keys and guitar jump in. I've always really liked this track.....maybe it's because I love the minor chords. They just have this kind of eerie feel to them, and they are used pretty extensively in this song. So, check out this track from Depeche Mode...."Behind The Wheel."

Song of the day........Pearl Jam with "Daughter"

One of my favorite moments of the Pearl Jam 20 movie that came out a couple of years ago was the footage of Eddie and Stone working on the creation of "Daughter." It was one of their biggest hits and it is just a brilliantly written song. It was one of the first songs that really made me appreciate the different sounds an instrument could make by using an alternate tuning. Stone's guitar is in an alternate tuning throughout "Daughter," and it really gives the song this kind of eerie feel to it. Just a great Pearl Jam song in my opinion. So, check out "Daughter."

Song of the day............Train with "Marry Me"

Today's song of the day is from Train's "Save Me San Francisco" album. This is one of my favorites from this album. I enjoy hearing rock bands put out tracks that are very stripped down. The album version doesn't have a whole lot of instrumentation on it either. Guitar, vocals, and a subtle use of keys. I think it's a really cool song that is a bit different from the typical Train song. So, check out Train with "Marry Me."

Today's song of the day is from a post Breeders band of Kim Deals called The Amps. They released their only album back in 1994, and it's interesting. Song of the day.........Muse with "Hate This & I'll Love You"

I recently discovered Muse, and really like their material. Every album is really unique, and that is hard to find with a lot of bands. To me, none of their albums sound similar. They are always surprising, and constantly moving in different directions. One of the standouts for me on their "Showbiz" album is this track "Hate This & I'll Love You." When I listen to Muse I hear a modern Rock band, but I also hear glimpses of classical music, stadium rock of the '70's, and modern Rock music all at the same time. I really like their sound. So, check out this track.......

Song of the day......Garbage with "Medication"

Today's song of the day comes to us from one of my favorite bands Garbage. I've always been impressed by the songwriting by this band. Just these beautiful songs. I think I've mentioned before that I am very fond of the incorporation of synth and keys in Rock music. Guitars are great, but when you add keys you suddenly get this depth to the songs that wouldn't be there with guitars alone. If I had to pick a few bands that by my definition do a great job of incorporating synth and keys into Rock music this band would certainly make the list. It's a lot of fun seeing these guys live and see Duke and Steve switch between guitars and keys mid song. Then you add the percussion of Mr. Butch Vig, and the vocals of Shirley, and you've got a recipe for some amazing material. Today's song is "Medication" off of the Version 2.0 album. The original has these over driven guitars that come in at the choruses, but this live version is stripped of those in favor Steve playing a clean guitar, and Duke playing synth. This is the first time that I've heard this live, and I really like this stripped down version. So, check this out, and if you don't already own Version 2.0 then what in the world are you thinking. It's a must own.....

Today's song of the day is one of my favorites from the '90's. It's off of the 2nd album from the rock band Brad titled "Interiors." The album is great from start to finish, but the song that really stands out on the album is "The Day Brings." When I heard it for the first time it honestly reminded me of how powerful a piano or keyboard can be in a rock song. It's what really drives this song, and so many of the songs from the album. Song of the day.......Nine Inch Nails with "March of the Pigs"

I believe this may have been the first single that NIN released off of "The Downward Spiral" album. The album is my favorite NIN album, because there is just so much going on during these songs. A year or two ago I acquired the DVD audio copy of this album, and it is a lot of fun to just sit in a room, and listen to this album in 5.1 Surround Sound. You can really hear all of the different things that are going on during these songs that way. It's incredible. One of the best albums of all time in my opinion. This track, "March of the Pigs," has this really beautiful piano part that is book ended by the raw aggressiveness that we come to expect from a Nine Inch Nails song.....It's done so well though. I've always loved this live video that they put out for it as well. See if you can count how many mics hit the ground. Song of the day........M. Ward with "Headed For A Fall"

I love discovering new music, and recently I came across some material from this 2007 M. Ward album "To Go Home." I started listening to some of his solo material after becoming a fan of his other projects. Everything I've heard is really good rock music with this overlaying Americana feel. It's what intrigues me to Bright Eyes to be honest. It's these really rocking tunes but with this additional feel of some of the great folk song writers of our time. I hear Dylan, Conor Oberst, Jeff Tweedy, and Woody Guthrie when I listen to M. Ward. He has a really cool sound, and I think you will dig it. So, check out "Headed For A Fall."

In honor of this great news today I think the song of the day should be an AC/DC number. This one is off of my favorite AC/DC album "Back In Black." Song of the day.......Trans-Siberian Orchestra with "Fur Elise"

Today's song is going, way, way, way back to a classic Beethoven composition that was redone by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. The orchestra has remade a bunch of Beethoven material for this "Beethoven's Last Night" album, but when it came to "Fur Elise" they didn't change it up a whole lot. I think that's the make of a great song....When a band is doing a cover of it they really don't need to change it up a whole lot because the original is such a classic, and was so well done upon its original creation. So, check out this Beethoven classic, as performed by Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

Song of the day............Boyz II Men with "4 Seasons of Loneliness"

I remember listening to a lot of Boyz II Men in the early '90's. Then I started to listen to more and more Rock music, and not as much Pop music. I remember a lot of Boyz II Men's material off of their first two albums, but I'm not familiar with much of their material beyond that. I took a listen to this track today, and it's not bad. Great vocals. I've always really liked the vocals of this group, and I think they were the gold standard of a male vocal group in the '90's. I think it's pretty safe to say that I'm more of a fan of some of Pantera's mellow material then some of the edgy heavy stuff. One of my favorite mellower songs from Pantera is this track "The Sleep" off of the Cowboys From Hell album. A friend of a friend had this album in High School, and I remember really liking it, although it was heavier than some of the grunge music that I was into at the time. "The Sleep" has some really cool things going on in it. Some really great guitar parts. So, check out "The Sleep."

They were just so darn good. All of these great vocals with a whole lot of soul, and their songs were so catchy. I still dig a lot of their stuff today.....So, check out this track "Please Don't Go." The first concert that I attended was a concert where the headliner was The Pretenders. This was back in the early '90's and they put on an amazing show. One of my favorite tracks by them is "Middle of the Road." I just love the chorus of this track. Those three chords that drive each line of it just make the song for me. That and the ending piece with the harmonica. Just a great track by Chrissie Hynde and company.

Song of the day.......The Out Crowd with "Be Good"

Today's song of the day comes to us from this band called The Out Crowd. Matt Hollywood is the lead guitarist and singer for the group, and Matt used to be in another group that I am really fond of, The Brian Jonestown Massacre. They were featured in the film "Dig" that is one of the best Rock & Roll documentaries of all time in my opinion. Just great!! Anyways, this band The Out Crowd is really good. I was able to see them live a few years back when they opened up for the Dandy Warhols. They put on a great show, and then Matt was out in the crowd watching the Dandy's and standing next to my friends and I. Would have loved to say "hi," but I didn't want to be that guy. A great band though, and this is one of the gems on their "Then I Saw The Holy City" album. Check out "Be Good."

Song of the day..........Muse with "Uprising"

Today's song of the day is from the band Muse. There are so many great songs by Muse, and they all are just so well written. If you listen to a lot of their music you find out pretty early that the musicians in the band have had some classical music influence as well. "The Resistance" is this great mix of hard rock music influenced by classical music, with a strong political overtone. The album just has this great feel to it, and is so well done. I think it has to be recognized as one of the best albums of the 2000's. Check out "Uprising."

Song of the day......The Cult with "Love Trooper"

What a great song title to begin with, right? The song is vintage Cult as well. Some great power chords interspersed with some catchy little riff. I really only started listening to the Cult in the last couple of years, but I'm glad that I started diving deeper into their catalog. There is some great stuff on their resume. Great stuff. Including this track "Love Trooper." Check it out.

Song of the day.......Screaming Females with "I Don't Mind It"

So, I saw this band a couple of years ago, and they were just captivating. For a three piece there is just such a full sound.....even with the guitarist playing a lead there is still this really full sound. I really dig these guys, and their stuff is catchy. You can tell each of these band members are great musicians. The sound is really tight. Guitarist/Vocalist is just tearing it up during this.......Check out "I Don't Mind It."

Today's song of the day is from the band Audioslave. The self-titled Audioslave album has to be one of the best Rock albums of all time. Every song on it was just amazing. Including this track "What You Are." It's got this slow building verse, and then the chorus comes in and just takes it to this whole new level. This chorus is one of my all-time favorites. Just a great track. Check out "What You Are."

Song of the day........"Shameless" by Garth Brooks

So, I know Garth didn't do the original on this, but I really think this is a case of the original not being as good as the cover. I love Garth's version of this, and the arrangement of this with the Pedal Steel is just great. It's hard for me to even listen to the original after listening to Garth's. He's just made "Shameless" a great country song. Check it out......

Song of the day.........Sophe Lux with "President"

How about some "Art Rock" for your Monday morning? I don't know a whole lot about Sophe Lux, but this is a track off of their 2007 album "Waking the Mystics." Vocally it kind of reminds me of Tanya Donelly, and musically its like this kind of Belle & Sebastian feel to it. It's pretty good though, so check out "President."

Song of the day..........Red Hot Chili Peppers with "By The Way"

John Frusciante's guitar was such an important aspect of the Red Hot Chili Peppers sound for such a long time. This is one of my faves with him at the guitar helm. His guitar style is just this perfect match of funk/soul/rock....... There are so many RHCP that would not be the same without him. This is one for sure.

Song of the day.......Cage the Elephant with "Shake Me Down"

Today's song of the day is from the band Cage the Elephant. They are quickly becoming one of my favorite new bands. New to me at least......They have now released a total of three albums, and this track is off of their 2nd album "Thank You, Happy Birthday." Cage has a sound that is pretty unique, and their lead singer reminds me a lot of a young Iggy Pop. I think that's pretty cool, and everything I've heard from them so far I really dig. Their sound reminds me a lot of the '70's punk rock scene. It's really good and it deserves a listen, so check out this track "Shake Me Down." Love the intro and verse riffs on this. Great track!

Song of the day.......Jeff Tweedy with "Simple Twist of Fate"

Today's song of the day is from the soundtrack to the Bob Dylan inspired film "I'm Not There." So, check out the song of the day........

Song of the day.........Temple of the Dog with "Hunger Strike"

This song has always been one of my favorites from the early '90's, and from the Seattle scene in particular, which I am quite fond of. It's just a great song, but it's more than that. To me, when I hear this song, I think of all of the great bands that came out of Seattle, and this song to me symbolizes that transition from some of the hair bands of the '80's to these great Seattle bands. The entire Temple of the Dog album is this beautiful tribute to the late Andrew wood, which was made up of Jeff and Stone, who would later go on to form Pearl Jam. What an amazing tribute to their friend. It still is one of my favorite albums of all time, and this track, and video are just so beautiful.......

Song of the day........Mercury Rev with "Tonite It Shows"

One of my favorite albums of all time is this album by a band called Mercury Rev. The album title is "Deserter's Songs." It's just got so much going on. There are these hard rock tracks, these folky numbers, and things in-between. The music on this album is just written so well in my opinion. One of the highlights for me is this song "Tonite It Shows," which is just this dreamy folk song. Check out "Tonite It Shows."

Song of the day..........AC/DC with "Back In Black"

It is one of my all time favorite tracks from AC/DC. After Bon Scott's passing this was the first track that AC/DC released with new singer Brian Johnson. What a way to come back from such a tragic event. They came back with this aggressive amazing song that just has so many great riffs in it. My favorite riff from this comes near the end of the song when they go into the chorus for the last time. It's just this great riff. So, check out "Back in Black" from AC/DC......

Song of the day.......Dave Matthews Band with "Where Are You Going"

Today's song of the day is from the Dave Matthews Band. There are a handful of bands that in my opinion have natural musicians playing each instrument in the band. I think if you took each musician in the Dave Matthews Band, and had them play something individually you would be as impressed as you are in listening to the band as a whole. I think all of these guys are just really great musicians, and you don't find that often. For each of these musicians the playing of a song just seems effortless no matter how difficult the song that they are playing is. So, check out "Where Are You Going."

Song of the day.......Soundgarden with "Outshined"

Today's song of the day is one of my favorite tracks from the Seattle band Soundgarden. I am, and always will be, a big fan of the Grunge sound of the late '80's and early '90's. I always felt that Soundgarden was unique to the "Seattle Sound." They were doing things that the other Seattle bands were not doing. I guess to me their sound had this darker element to it. They were using an alternate tuning on their guitars that was just giving this darker element to their music, and it really made their music stand out. One of the first tracks that I heard from them was this song "Outshined." Just a great song in this drop-D tuning that really gave it this edgy drive throughout the song. Then there are the chords at the chorus, which just sound so right in this song. It is definitely one of my favorite choruses of all time. It's just such a contrast from the edgy riff during the verse, and it works perfectly. Of course there are also the vocals of Chris Cornell, which are among my favorite of lead singers. So, check out "Outshined" off of the "Badmotorfinger" album.

Song of the day........Satchel with "Looking Forward"

Shawn Smith is one of my favorite vocalists. He's just got so much soul in his vocals, and he's amazing on the keys as well. One of Shawn's musical projects is this band Satchel, who just do great rock songs. One of my faves that satchel does is this song "Looking Forward." Back in 2005 Satchel, and another one of Shawn's musical projects, Brad, released an album of music that was created but never found a place on an album. One of those songs was "Looking Forward." Love the keys in this, and also love the guitar tone on this track, and the effects that are being used. I wish I could pinpoint what effects are being used, because I'd love to try to replicate that sound for myself......... Check out "Looking Forward."

Song of the day........AC/DC wtih "Thunderstruck"

It's probably one of the most recognizable AC/DC songs from their catalog of great tunes. That riff that Angus plays at the beginning of this is just epic. On the recorded version that riff is playing throughout the song, and forms the foundation for the track. "Thunderstruck" is one of many tracks that highlight "The Razor's Edge" album. Song of the day.........Red Hot Chili Peppers with "Californication"

The Red Hot Chili Peppers closed out the '90's just as they opened the decade......with a great album. "Californication," the title track off of that album, is just a beautiful piece of music. The bass and guitar on this just mesh so well together and kind of create this landscape of soul, and blues that is just beautiful. I think it's one of the greatest songs that the Chili Peppers have written so far, and is just different from anything else that they've done to date. Check out "Californication."

Song of the day.......Justin Roberts with "Fruit Jar"

So, Sunday's song of the day comes to us from Justin Roberts. Justin's Twitter account has a very good summary of what his music is. "Indie Rock for kids and adults." That's exactly what he does, and he does it better than any other children's music artist. To simply call his music kid's music is not truly giving it the credit that it deserves. It is great kids music, but it's also incredibly well done, intelligent, kid's music. The songwriting is such that it reminds you of some of the best in Indie rock, and the lyrics are appealing to kids and adults alike. I've had the pleasure of taking our son to two of his concerts over the years, and it was one of my son's first concerts. This last year Justin was nominated for a Grammy, and I'm eagerly looking forward to what Justin does next.

Song of the day........OneRepublic with "Made For You"

One of my favorite bands of the last couple of years is the band OneRepublic. They just have a great sound, and all of their songs are just so well written. The first track on the Waking Up album is this track "Made For You." I love the piano hook in this. It just draws you into the rest of the song. I always think that the opening track for an album really says a lot about the album. I've got to think that bands make a conscientious decision to start off an album with a track that really creates interest in the rest of the album. This track definitely does that, and I think it's one of the great first tracks on an album in the last ten years certainly. So, check out OneRepublic's "Made For You."

Today's song of the day is by New Kids On The Block. I remember when I was in school this was huge, and everybody was doing that dance that is in the video here at the chorus. Song of the day.......Radiohead with "Bullet Proof...I Wish I Was"

Back when I was in high school I remember that my parents had a cassette deck in their car, and I would take the car to school on a daily basis, and play this collection of tapes that I had. One of those was Radiohead's magnificent album "The Bends." About two years ago I went and re-purchased the album on CD, and it was amazing to me how listening to that CD some 20 years later just takes me back to those days of driving to school listening to this album. Great CD, and this is a great track off of that album. Love the lead guitar part at the chorus on this. Just adds so much to that chorus. Great track. Check out "Bullet Proof...I Wish I Was."

Song of the day.........AC/DC with "Stiff Upper Lip"

Today's song of the day is from veteran rockers AC/DC, and is the title track off of their Stiff Upper Lip album. Power chords, power chords, and more power chords, but it is always interesting, and they have the ability to change each song enough to keep it interesting. I love the opening to this, and then you just know once Angus' riff stops that the whole band is going to come crashing in. Every album they prove that they are not slowing down at all. Song of the day......AC/DC with "Hells Bells"

Today's song of the day is from the AC/DC album "Back In Black," which was the first album that AC/DC released with new singer Brian Johnson. There isn't a NFL game that goes by anymore where I don't hear those bells, and Angus' guitar riff playing that intro. It's kind of become a stadium anthem. If Meat Loaf is the master of the ballad, then these guys were, and continue to be, the master of the power chords. They've done some absolutely great things with power chords over the years. I love the intro in this, and then when the whole band kicks in during that intro riff is just great. Check out "Hells Bells," a classic from AC/DC.

Song of the day........U2 with "Pride"

I was watching the movie "42" today, and was thinking of what it must have been like to live in Jackie Robinson's America, and what bravery it took on his part to do what he did. Got me thinking about the movement led by Martin Luther King to fight for equal rights in this country for African Americans. I always get choked up when I hear U2's song "Pride," which was written as a tribute to Martin Luther King. Song of the day.....Meat Loaf with "Left In The Dark"

Like I said over the weekend, Meat Loaf is the king of rock ballads. I don't think anyone else's rock ballad resume is as long as Meat Loaf's. Today's song of the day is just further evidence of that, and is another track off of the "Welcome To The Neighborhood" album. I think it's honestly one of his best albums. Song of the day........One Republic with "Counting Stars"

Today's song of the day is from the band One Republic, and is off of their latest CD "Native." The album is one of my favorites of 2013, and has been a pretty constant selection on the iPod.The entire album is just great. Probably the single that's received the most air play, and for good reason, is this single "Counting Stars." Opening with a great vocal line over this acoustic guitar part, and shortly followed by the whole band jumping in. In the live performance there is even a Xylophone added after the whole band joins in. Everything in this track is just perfect. I especially like the synth line that comes in over the chorus. It kind of ties it all together. Great track. Great band. If you can, check them out live as well. They put on an amazing live show. One of the best shows that I have ever been to was their performance at Red Rocks last year. Amazing.....

Song of the day........Meat Loaf with "I'd Lie For You"

I think he's the master of the rock ballad to be honest. They are all just so good, and most clock in at close to ten minutes strong. This is one of my favorites, because it wasn't on the radio every ten minutes when I was growing up like some of his more popular tracks. It has some great guitar parts in it, and I love the drum part at the chorus. Patti Russo and Meat Loaf's vocals just mesh perfectly on this, as they do on all of Meat Loaf's albums. Today's song of the day comes to us from The Cardigans, and their album Gran Turismo. I love this album. In particular on this track the music has just got so much going on. This riffing by the guitarist, the distorted bass guitar part, and then this synth part that plays over the whole thing accentuating what the bass and lead guitar are doing. It just sounds great. Nina Persson's vocals on this are just spot on as well. Not bad for someone who has never sang professionally before The Cardigans. That starting drum riff is just a great start to the song as well. It's not very often that I pick an R&B song as my song of the day, but today I'm making an exception. I love the sound of the guitars on some of those R&B tracks from the '70's. This is a perfect example of this great tone, and the guitars just are so full of soul. I like how this opens with Shirley having a conversation on the phone. As these guys develop further into their career they still continue to release incredible music. Today's song of the day is from their 2005 album "Playing the Angel." In my opinion it's one of the greatest tracks they've ever recorded. I've always loved Depeche Mode's sound, but it seems like now they are incorporating more guitar than they used to. It's always been there, but it seems like it's more prominent later in their career, and used more extensively. As you can see by the video here, Martin Gore is playing guitar throughout this track. Song of the day......Pearl Jam with "Corduroy"

Today's song of the day is from one of my favorite bands, Pearl Jam. I've seen them over ten times live, and would love to see them again some day. Today's song is off of their Vitalogy album that was released back in 1994. In the summer of '95 Pearl Jam went on tour to promote that album and played two sold out shows at Red Rocks. I was lucky enough to go to the 2nd show with my best friend, and it inspired me to want to play music. It was, and still is, one of the greatest rock concerts that I have ever been a part of. It was just a magical evening and the band had an amazing set list, and you could tell the band was playing lights out minutes into the show. To me, Pearl Jam, personifies what a live band should be about. They bring so much emotion into their live shows that it is just amazing to me. Great band. Check out "Corduroy" in this video from the concert that I was at back in 1995. Love the riff that starts this off, and it's return at the break near the end of this song.

Song of the day.....Carolina Liar with "Coming To Terms"

There are a few new bands that I am really into right now. New to me I guess, as some of them have been around for a while, and I'm just now discovering them. One of those bands is this group called Carolina Liar. One of the things that I like about Carolina Liar is their incorporation of synth in their songs. Their is a synth lead in this track, which is the title track off of their Coming to Terms album. Today's song of the day is from Glen Phillips' album Winter Pays for Summer, which I can't say enough good things about. It is the most complete album I've ever owned to be honest. Meaning I can listen to it from start to finish, and never feel like there is a song that I don't get, or a song that I feel the need to skip to the next track. Song of the day......Metallica with "The Unforgiven III"

It seems like in the mid '90's Metallica's sound changed a bit. It seems to me through my listening that they decided to distance themselves from some of the speed metal stuff that they kind of broke on the scene with. I know that some say they kind of melded their sound with some of the sounds of popular music in the '90's. Whatever they've done I like it. I think the last 3 or 4 Metallica albums have been their best yet to be honest. What I've heard off of this Death Magnetic album is really great including this track "Unforgiven III." I just love this track. The opening piano part, these great riffs at the verse, and great catchy chorus. I like it better that their earlier stuff. It's just really decent songwriting......Great job Metallica.

Song of the day......Black Rebel Motorcycle Club with "Fault Line"

One of my favorite albums by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is the Howl album. There are so many different dynamics to the album. From song to song you get a myriad of different musical styles. Some songs to me have a blues influence, rock of course, and some songs even have a gospel kind of sound to them. It's all in one album, and I love albums that have a lot of different feels within the same album. The Howl album is one of my favorite examples of that. One of the highlights of that album for me is this song "Fault Line." The track is basically Peter Hayes singing, playing guitar, and playing harmonica. Just a great bluesy kind of track. Love it.

Song of the day.......Rehab with "Wht Do U Wnt Frm Me"

Today's song of the day is from this band Rehab, who I must admit I'm not all that familiar with. I saw them at a festival back in 2001 or so, and thought they were pretty good. I do like their sound including this track. Check out "Wht Do U Wnt Frm Me" by Rehab.

Song of the day....."Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy"

Why not? Christmas is over, and you won't hear this again probably for another 9 to 10 months.... Seriously this is in my top ten Christmas songs for sure. I just love that opening little riff, and how it builds into a crescendo at the end. Check out "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy."

Song of the day.......One Republic with "Apologize"

Today's song of the day comes from Colorado's own One Republic. Back in 2007 this song was the band's first hit off of the Dreaming Out Loud album. The piano and cello parts of this song are so freaking good. Then you put Ryan Tedder's vocals over that, and it's just a complete, great song. There's no wonder that this track put One Republic on the map. Check out "Apologize."

Song of the day........The Dandy Warhols with "Boys Better"

Today's song of the day comes to us from Portland Oregon's Dandy Warhols. Back in the '90's you could say I listened to mainstream radio exclusively. Which wasn't necessarily a bad thing all the time.....there were some great mainstream bands back in those days. In the late '90's, early 2000's something changed in the ways that I found new music. One of my best friends went off to college in this time, and when he came back on break he brought with him a couple CD's from this band that he was really into. I think we went out and played pool or something, and as we drove around town he played tracks off of this Dandy Warhols CD titled "Come Down." It was all just so good. It was then that I started to realize that there was this great undiscovered plethora of music that might only be played sparingly on radio, if at all. Since this discovery I can't remember the last time I listened to FM radio unless there was no other option.

Anyways check out one of these great tracks from the Dandy Warhols. They are a great band, and are a great band to see live as well. Check out "Boys Better."

Song of the day........Semisonic with "Closing Time"

Today's song of the day is from this band Semisonic, who had a few big hits in the mid to late '90's. None as popular as this track. I love the piano part in this. I also dig the bridge part to this track too, as the bridge just kind of builds into this crescendo kind of thing. I always kind of liked this song. So, check out Semisonic with "Closing Time."

Song of the day..........John Common and Blinding Flashes of Light with "Turnaround"

When Phil Everly of The Everly Brothers passed away last week I pulled out one of their greatest hits albums and listened to it straight through. One thing that resonated with me was the vocal harmonies. The Everly Brother's had this uncanny knack of singing together and making two voices into one creating this absolutely beautiful vocal arrangement. One of the few bands today that I've heard that vocally reminds me of some of those great Everly vocals is this band John Common and Blinding Flashes of Light. John Common and Jess De Nicola's voices just mesh so well together, and the result is absolutely beautiful. Check out this video for "Turnaround." Just a beautiful video, and a great song.

Song of the day........Jack Johnson with "We're Going To Be Friends"

Technically I should like Jack Johnson right? I like stuff that is very similar to his stuff musically, however, it's a struggle for me. That struggle is even more apparent on this cover that he did of the White Stripes song "We're Going To Be Friends," which is a pretty decent song on its own. I don't know if this song is one of those songs that should never be done as a cover, because I think someone could do it and it be good. I just struggle with this song to be honest. Check out Jack Johnson's cover of "We're Going To Be Friends," and then check out the original by the White Stripes, and see what you think for yourself.

Song of the day........Home Grown with "Kiss Me, Diss Me"

Today's song of the day is by this Orange County, CA band Home Grown. They disbanded back in 2005, but I've been really digging some of their stuff recently. Their music is kind of a mix of Rock/Pop/Punk, and their songwriting is pretty good. Check out this track off of their 2002 album "Kings of Pop," here is "Kiss Me, Diss Me."

Song of the day.........Wilco with "She's A Jar"

Today's song of the day is from one my favorite bands. Each and every band member in Wilco is so incredibly talented that it's really kind of a super-group in my opinion. That is pretty clear from all of the various side projects of this band....all the side projects are incredibly good as well. You don't find that all the time. So, this track if off of Summerteeth, which was a different album from their debut A.M.. Summerteeth was a lot more experimental, and you can tell that Wilco was starting to add some more layers to already incredible songwriting. I can't say enough about all of Wilco's albums.....but today let's just focus on this song "She's A Jar." Just a great song. I especially love the little harmonica part after the chorus, and the keyboard part that precedes it.

So, today's song of the day is from Perephone's Bees, who I saw several years ago open up for The New Cars. Just a great band. I've liked a lot of the songs that they've released including this one. I just love the keys and guitar in this...... Check out "East/West."

Song of the day............Garbage with "I Think I'm Paranoid"

This song of the day is from one of the best live bands that I have ever seen. I saw them way back in the day open for Alanis Morissette when they were touring off of Version 2.0, and they blew me away. They were the hit of the show for me. It was one of the only shows where I was more impressed by the opening act then the main act. One of the first singles off of that album was "I Think I'm Paranoid," which just has this amazing chorus. I just love those guitars coming in with those driving chords at the chorus. Just great!! If you look very carefully at 2:27 in this video clip for the song live, you can see some goofy Song of the Day blogger and his wife about 5 or 6 rows deep. I'm wearing a black cap and black jacket.

Song of the day..........Meat Loaf with "It's All Coming Back To Me Now"

This song is probably in my top 25 cover songs of all time probably. I really like Meat Loaf's version of this Celine Dion song. It sounds more gritty, and more Rock 'n' Roll to me I guess. Check it out......it's pretty good.

Song of the day..........Goo Goo Dolls with "Here Is Gone"

Today's song of the day is from Goo Goo Dolls and is off of their 2002 album "Gutterflower." I thought this was a fitting song to use for the first day of 2014 since 2013 is gone......gone......gone. There are so many good Goo Goo Dolls songs, but this is one of my all time favorites. I just love the feel of it. The music in those verses just flows so nicely, and then builds right into the chorus. Check out Goo Goo Dolls with "Here is Gone."
