Song of the day.......Soundgarden with "Limo Wreck"

I was way, way, way into the Seattle scene in the early to mid '90's. I still am for that matter. Now with 20th and 25th anniversary editions of my favorite Seattle bands albums being released I'm finding myself drawn back into that sound. Those distorted guitars, bone shaking drums, and aggressive vocals.... For me there is nothing better than good '90's Seattle rock. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Mother Love Bone, Alice In Chains, and Soundgarden. For me Soundgarden was not one of the bands that I was heavily into when the Seattle scene exploded, but now more than ever I am discovering the incredible music that they have been producing over the years. One of my favorite tracks off of their mega popular "Superunknown" album is this track "Limo Wreck." It's just got such a dark feel to it, and the intro and break riffs are just this genius mix of harmonics on the guitar, which is perfectly complemented by the bass riff. The verse guitar riff is just so fitting as well. Then the chorus comes in with this great deep sound to it....this must be a "drop D" tuning guitar part. All of the parts feel quite independent from each other, but they mix in this track so damn good. So, check out this track "Limo Wreck." It's kind of a lesser known track from the "Superunknown" album, but just so great.

Song of the day.......Sara Bareilles with "City"

A couple of years ago my wife and I saw Sara Bareilles open up for OneRepublic at Red Rocks. I have to admit that I was not that familiar with her catalog other than her hits. Her performance blew us away, and in the years since I have gotten more familiar with her discography. Great music. Soulful music. In the early '90's I found myself listening to Tori Amos for the exact same reasons. I've always loved the sound of the piano, and some people can play it and make it an extension of themselves, and it's just this beautiful, soulful thing. Billy Joel and Elton John are in that category of musicians as well. They can play a piano in a room, and it just be them, and its amazing. So, check out this great track from Sara Bareilles titled "City." Just a beautiful number.

Song of the day......Gogol Bordello with "Shy Kind Of Guy"

Today's song of the day is a slower number from the Gypsy-Punk band Gogol Bordello's catalog. I saw these guys open for Faith No More at Red Rocks a couple of months ago, and their set was pretty amazing. Lots of energy, and great material. I've been listening to them a lot lately on Pandora, and I am really digging their material. Today's song of the day is the first song, but definitely not the last, to appear on my Song of the Day blog. Love the accordion on this. Check out "Shy Kind of Guy" from Gogol Bordello.

Song of the day........Wilco with "War on War"

What more can you say about Wilco's album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot? It' an amazing album. One of my favorite albums from start to finish. It's just so good, and it's a complete masterpiece. I got it on vinyl a couple of Christmases ago from my sister-in-law, and it's just one of those albums that you put on and listen all the way through. It's just great from start to finish, and for me, listening to that album for the first time was awe inspiring. It was one of those moments where you hear an album for the first time, and it just resonates. So, so, so well done. So, check out a track from this classic album. Today's song of the day is "War on War." I really love the synth part that comes in at about 1:40 in this live version from "Letterman." It's like this great dance between the keyboard part and Glenn's drums.

Song of the day........John Common & Blinding Flashes of Light with "Don't Follow Virginia"

Today's song of the day is from John Common & Blinding Flashes of Light, a local Denver area band that I really dig. Really great melodies, and outstanding vocals. Great songwriting as well. If you see these guys are coming to a venue near you then definitely make it a point to see them. Check out this track "Don't Follow Virginia" from the "Beautiful Empty" album.

Song of the day......Peter Bjorn and John with "Stop Making Sense"

Today's song of the day is from Peter Bjorn and John and is this song "Stop Making Sense." I've really gotten into these guys in the last couple of years. Great, unique music.....I still have a lot of listening to do of their back catalog, but what I've heard I've really enjoyed. So, check out "Stop Making Sense."

Song of the day......Collective Soul with "Blame"

I've been away a while, and it's time to start this song of the day blog back up again. My returning song of the day is from Collective Soul, a band whose MO seems to be to write the catchiest songs possible. This track really didn't receive a whole lot of airplay when it came out. In fact, I don't recall hearing it before this week when I was listening to my Pandora station. A decent track though, and as with most of their material, it will be stuck in your head for the better part of the next 24 hours. So, check out "Blame" from Collective Soul.

Song of the day......Yonder Mountain String Band with "Eight Cylinders"

Gotta admit.....I've heard a handful of songs from the Yonder Mountain String Band, and everything  sounds the same to me. Just have to be honest with that.

Song of the day......Vampire Weekend with "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa"

I must admit that I'm not incredibly familiar with the Vampire Weekend catalog, but what I've heard I've really liked. They have an interesting sound. This track is off of their 2008 self-titled album. Check out "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa."

Song of the day.......Tim Hecker with "Hatred of Music: II"

So, I've been listening to some "Ambient Music" recently, and have been trying to figure it out. It's so different from the straight up rock that I am most familiar with. It's interesting.......I just keep waiting for more, and when more doesn't come I try to make sense of it. Tim Hecker is one of the top names in the Ambient Music world, so it makes sense to start with some of his tunes. Check out this track "Hatred of Music: II." See what you think.

Song of the day........Brother Cane with "Machete"

Today's song of the day is from this band Brother Cane. They were one of my favorite bands in high school. My parents car had a tape deck, and two of my most played tapes in high school were this album "Wishpool," and their other album "Seeds." I saw them open for Van Halen when they were touring off of their album "Balance." Just an amazing live band as well. Today's song is "Machete," a great track off of "Wishpool." I love the riff after the chorus in this. Just some great stuff going on with the guitars on this track. So give a listen to "Machete."

Song of the day..........Depeche Mode with "Sacred"

For Christmas my sister-in-law bought me a copy of Depeche Mode's live "101" album. I have to admit that I'm vastly more familiar with Depeche's stuff from the '90's than I am of their '80's material. The "101" album was a good starting place to check out some of their material from the '80s that perhaps wasn't on mainstream radio. One of those gems, in my opinion, is this track "Sacred." Just a great synth part in this. So, check out "Sacred" by Depeche Mode.

Song of the day.......Coldplay with "The Scientist"

Today's song of the day is one of my favorite songs from the band Coldplay. There really isn't a whole lot going on with this song, but I think that's the beauty of it. The song is driven by Chris Martin's piano, and it's just a beautiful piano part. The song just builds throughout and near the end the drums and distorted guitar come in. It's just a great song, and one of Coldplay's best in my opinion. So, check out Coldplay with "The Scientist."

Song of the day.........Stabbing Westward with "Haunting Me"

Today's song of the day is from the band Stabbing Westward. Their early material is just great. Wither, Blister, Burn & Peel has so many great tunes on it. I definitely prefer that album over the Darkest Days album. There are some decent tracks on Darkest Days though. One of those is this track "Haunting Me." It has been featured in a few movies, so you may recognize it from one of those films. It's decent, but just doesn't have the hook that so many of those tracks from Wither. Check out "Haunting Me."

Song of the day........David Garrett with "Vivaldi Vs. Vertigo"

I like it when Rock music is played by an orchestra, or when an orchestra plays along with a Rock band. Some of my favorites over the years have been Metallica playing with the San Francisco Orchestra, and more recently the Death Cab for Cutie/Orchestra pairing. When it's done well it is truly magical. This guy David Garrett released his "Rock Symphonies" album a few years back and includes some interesting combinations. Today's song of the day is one of those. Here's U2's "Vertigo" mixed with some Vivaldi. It certainly is interesting. Let me know what you think of it.

Song of the day...........Flyleaf with "All Around Me"

So, today's song of the day is a song that I've just recently discovered through internet radio. This was originally released on Flyleaf's self titled album back in 2005. It's just a great Rock track. I am really not familiar enough with their material to compare it to other songs that they have done, but I know that I need to explore their catalog some more. Lacey Sturm's vocals on this are just amazing. When I first heard this track, without knowing who it was, I thought it was a new Paramore song. It just has that same kind of feel to it, and I think vocally the two bands are similar. I love the guitar parts at the chorus of this track too. That lead guitar just has this really beautiful riff that's going over those chords. Check out this track from Flyleaf. It's worth a listen.

Song of the day.......The Cult with "Love Removal Machine (Peace)"

Today's song of the day is from The Cult. A band that I honestly am not that familiar with, but that I'm starting to really dig. I do remember the original version of this song being on Rock radio quite a bit in the '80's. I really dig this song. That guitar riff during the chorus is just wicked. So, give "Love Removal Machine" a listen, because it really is a great tune. And also check out some of the other tracks that these guys have done. There is some really good stuff there.

Song of the day..........The Dandy Warhols with "Bohemian Like You"

One of the best albums, in my opinion, to come out in 2000 was this amazing album by The Dandy Warhols. The album is titled "Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia," and it's a great listen from start to finish. One of the tracks, which got extensive radio play, was this track "Bohemian Like You." It's just a great Rock song. From the opening synth and drum beats, to that guitar riff at the chorus. Just a great track, and one of my faves. Check out "Bohemian Like You."

Song of the day.......Alice In Chains with "Over Now"

This has always been one of my favorites off of the self-titled Alice In Chains album. I think the lyrics are so poignant being on the last album with Layne Staley. Lyrically and musically it's some of AIC's best work for sure. So check out "Over Now."

Song of the day.........Trans-Siberian Orchestra with "Mozart/Figaro"

I think when you hear the band name "Trans-Siberian Orchestra" you instantly think of their great Christmas albums. They've got a couple other non-Christmas albums that are well worth a listen. My favorite of those is this album "Beethoven's Last Night." It features all of these classical compositions done with a Rock and Roll spin. It's really well done. A few years back my family and I were lucky enough to see the album played live in its entirety. Just amazing. So, check out this track from that album. This is "Mozart/Figaro."

Song of the day........The Flys with "Groove Is Where You Find It"

Today's song of the day is by this California band "The Flys," who had a big hit in the '90s with "Got You Where I Want You." In every song that I've heard by these guys so far there is a pretty fair amount of reverb/effects on the vocals. It's almost like it's their signature thing......maybe I'm wrong about that. This song grows on you though. I really like the guitar parts on this though. I did see them live back in the day, but to be honest I don't remember a whole lot from the set. Check out this song for your Monday though. The Fly's with "Groove Is Where You Find It."

Song of the day........V.A.S.T. with "Everything Passing By"

One of the most talented songwriters of the past two decades is this guy Jon Crosby. I remember listening to VAST's debut album for the first time and just being amazed at it. It was like nothing I had ever heard before. They were these amazing heavy rock songs that were also incorporating these beautiful samples of chants of monks. Just beautiful and amazing.....every track. Today's song of the day is from his album April, and it is this track "Everything Passing By." It's just a beautiful track, and the strings on this are just beyond beautiful. If you haven't heard anything by V.A.S.T. before then go out and get an album. They are all amazing, and there is not a bad track on any of them. So, check out "Everything Passing By."

Song of the day.......Snapcase with "Harrison Bergeron"

This is one of those examples of a song that I enjoy bits and pieces of, but as a whole it's just not something that I'm totally into. There are some cool moments in this song....but I think as I get older, my enjoyment of yelling in music has lessened.

Song of the day..........Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch with "Good Vibrations"

Ok, so back in the early '90's I was a big fan of what I guess would be categorized as "Hard Rock." I was listening to Guns 'N' Roses, Metallica, and the like.....and really didn't pay too much attention to the Pop music scene. Then I saw the video for this Marky Mark song "Good Vibrations." It kind of changed the way that I looked at Pop music. At that moment it actually seemed pretty cool to me. I have to admit I was, and maybe still am, a fan of this song. Of course now Mark Wahlberg has gone on to become an amazing actor, but I will always remember my first interest in Pop music coming from this track.......Check out "Good Vibrations."

If you are looking for good music to have on the iPod while you are at the gym then this album doesn't disappoint. Those who know me know that I am a Rock guy, but there are songs that I listen to from the Pop/Dance/Hip Hop genres that I think are pretty good. I've heard a few tracks off of this #WILLPOWER album, and I like what I've heard. Check out this track "Gettin' Dumb."

Song of the day.........Drain STH with "Crave"

How about some metal from Stockholm Sweden for your Sunday? This is my favorite metal band to come out of the '90's. Are there a lot of metal bands that have vocal harmonies? I think it's a pretty small number. They released two great albums in the late '90's including this album "Freaks of Nature," which features today's song of the day, "Crave." I discovered this band at a hard rock radio stations annual birthday celebration, and was very impressed with this band. So, check out "Crave."

Song of the day......The Suicide Machines with "Sometimes I Don't Mind"

I remember seeing these guys back in the mid '90's at Red Rocks. I believe they opened for No Doubt and Weezer if I'm not mistaken. I could be wrong with that though...... Great band. I really dig their sound, and this self titled album has some great stuff on it. Including this track "Sometimes I Don't Mind." I just really like this track. Great guitar parts. Love the solo.....and the harmonizing vocals throughout. So, check out this track from their self titled album......

Today's song of the day is from the band Tonic, and their 1996 debut album "Lemon Parade." Great band name by the way..... I remember buying this album after I heard this song. That guitar part is just so infectious. The track just has a great sound. It was, and still is one of my favorites from the mid '90's. Check out Tonic with "If You Could Only See."

Song of the day.........Trans Siberian Orchestra with "Mozart and Memories"

Today the "Song of the Day" blog is back for 2015, and its return goes back to where it began.....with TSO. A concert experience from back in 2012 at a TSO concert led to the creation of this blog. Somewhere that I can share with others the music that I think is cool.

Today's song of the day is from TSO, and is off of their Night Castle album. It's called "Mozart and Memories," and is really a great track. Love the synth, and violin parts in this. Just a great track.
